Description
Set off on a one-day adventure into the wild beauty of Mawlyngbna, a hidden village nestled in Meghalaya’s rolling hills.
The adventure begins with a thrilling river canyoning trek through the Umkhakoi River, guided by skilled locals who have grown up navigating these waters, an exhilarating 3 km stretch of climbing, sliding, swimming, and scrambling through a natural waterpark, wading through crystal-clear pools and leaping across boulders.
As the canyoning trail softens, you will emerge at the serene Umkhakoi Lake, a natural reservoir framed by dramatic cliffs and overhanging forest. Kayak across it and paddle gently over the still waters, watching the sky ripple in the lake’s mirrored surface.
The Split Rock hike offers one last chapter of exploration. Venture into a narrow rock formation, navigating wooden ladders and ancient stones as you make your way into a dramatic gorge etched by time and rain, revealing ancient rock walls and hidden fossils.
Wrap up the day with a hearty Khasi lunch, freshly prepared and deeply flavourful, before heading back, soaked in rain, stories, and the magic of Meghalaya’s living landscape.
FAQs
How difficult is the Mawlyngbna River Canyoning and Split Rock Hike: What to expect in terms of Terrain, Altitude, Weather and Safety?
The Mawlyngbna trek is easy and beginner-friendly, making it perfect for first-time adventurers and casual travellers looking for a taste of Meghalaya’s wild beauty. The river canyoning segment is guided and done at a steady pace, with short stretches of walking, wading through shallow waters, and water slides. No technical skills are required. Kayaking is on calm lake water, suitable for all skill levels. The short trek to Split Rock includes descending wooden ladders and navigating uneven ground, but it is manageable with basic caution. Comfortable footwear, a moderate fitness level, and a love for the outdoors are all you need to enjoy this safe and rewarding monsoon experience.
When is the best time to do the Mawlyngbna River Canyoning and Split Rock Hike?
The best window for this adventure is from April to October, when monsoon-fed rivers run high, the waterfalls roar to life, and the entire landscape turns vividly lush. This period, especially between April and early September, offers ample adrenaline via strong currents and natural slides, making river canyoning, kayaking, and hikes more exciting and memorable.
April-May and September-October: Light seasonal rains boost river levels without overwhelming force. You will enjoy good flow and stunning scenery without dangerous conditions.
June and July, the heart of monsoon, bring the highest river flows and dramatic waterfalls, perfect for thrill-seekers. However, these months can also be unpredictable and slippery, so activities require expert guidance and a little caution.
Winter months (November-March): While mild and pleasant, river levels recede. Water-based activities are still possible but less adventurous.
