FAQs
How difficult is the Nongriat Trek: What to expect in terms of Terrain, Altitude, Weather and Safety?
The Nongriat trek is moderately challenging, making it suitable for fit beginners and seasoned trekkers alike. The trail primarily consists of 3,500 stone-cut stairs descending steeply through dense forest, followed by equally demanding ascents on the return. While the trek does not involve high altitudes or technical climbing, it does demand good stamina, strong knees, and comfortable trekking shoes. Weather can be unpredictable, with frequent showers making the steps slippery, so caution is advised. With basic preparation and a steady pace, this lush jungle trail is both safe and incredibly rewarding.
When is the best time to do the Nongriat Trek?
The best time to do the Nongriat Trek is between October and May, when the weather is relatively dry, skies are clearer, and the forest is lush but manageable. During these months the chances of rainfall are lower, making the steep stone stairs less slippery and the trek safer. The monsoon season (June to September) brings heavy rains which, while enhancing the beauty of waterfalls and root bridges, also make the trail more treacherous. For the most comfortable and scenic experience, plan your trek in the cooler, drier months.
