Description
Trek to the Mouth of Nohkalikai Falls – A Journey Above the Clouds
Hidden deep in the lush rainforests of Meghalaya, the Nohkalikai Falls Mouth Trek is a raw, immersive adventure that leads you to the very edge of India’s tallest plunge waterfall. This isn’t your usual viewpoint visit—it’s a journey through ancient landscapes, tangled roots, mossy rocks, hidden waterfalls, and echoing silence, ending at a surreal, roaring abyss where the earth seems to fall away beneath your feet.
The tallest plunge waterfall in India, Nohkalikai Falls is more than just a natural wonder. It is steeped in sorrowful legend. The name Nohkalikai literally translates to “the leap of Ka Likai”, a tribute to a tragic tale passed down by the local Khasi people.
Long ago, a young widow named Ka Likai lived in the village of Rangjyrteh upstream of the waterfall. After the death of her husband, she remarried, hoping to build a better life for herself and her daughter. Likai took over her late husband’s profession as a porter, transporting loads of iron to Shylet, and spent the majority of her day working. What little time she had at home was spent giving her young daughter her full attention and love. The new spouse was envious and resentful that Likai paid more attention to the child than himself. One day, while she was away working, he killed the child and according to legend, cooked her flesh into a meal. When Likai returned, unaware of the horror, and tired she ate what had been prepared. After she finished her meal, noticing the absence of her daughter, Likai decided to go look for her only to discover her daughter’s severed fingers in a betel nut basket. She realized she’d eaten her own child. Likai, overcome with grief and dismay, dashed out of the house, waving a wait (hatchet) to keep others from stopping her as she ran to the edge of the cliffs and leapt to her death, forever giving the falls their haunting name.
Even today, locals say you can feel the weight of her grief in the mist that rises from the plunge.
- How difficult is the Nohkalikai Falls Trek: What to expect in terms of Terrain, Altitude, Weather and Safety ?
The Nohkalikai Falls Mouth Trek is rated moderately difficult and is best suited for those with decent fitness, good balance, and a love for raw, offbeat terrain. The trek begins on grassy and forested paths but quickly transitions into rugged sections that involve navigating slippery boulders, stream crossings, narrow log bridges, and moss-covered slopes. Though the overall altitude is moderate, the route includes several elevation changes and uneven ground that demand careful footing and stamina.
Trekkers will encounter sections requiring basic scrambling over rocks and brief crawl-throughs in cave-like passages—no technical climbing gear is needed, but hands may be used for stability. During or after rains, the trail becomes especially slick, and leeches may be present in wetter areas. While weather is generally humid and mild, conditions can change quickly, so rain protection and grippy footwear are essential.
There are no guardrails at the waterfall’s mouth, so caution and strict adherence to your guide’s instructions are critical near the edge. With preparation, a reasonable pace, and a healthy respect for nature’s unpredictability, the Nohkalikai Falls Mouth Trek delivers a thrilling, immersive jungle experience that rewards every drop of sweat with unforgettable views.
- Best time to do the Nohkalikai Falls Trek:
- The best time to do the Nohkalikai Falls Mouth Trek is between October and March, when the weather is dry, skies are clearer, and the trail conditions are far more manageable. These post-monsoon and winter months offer the safest and most enjoyable trekking experience, with lush greenery still lingering from the rains and river levels low enough for easy crossing. The cooler temperatures also make the hike more comfortable, and visibility from the waterfall’s edge is often spectacular.
Autumn (October–November) is particularly rewarding, with gushing but accessible waterfalls and misty morning views. Winter (December–February) brings crisp air, drier paths, and fewer insects, though mornings can be chilly and the trail slightly harder underfoot. The monsoon season (June to September), while visually dramatic, is not recommended for trekking due to dangerously slippery terrain, high water levels, and limited visibility near the falls. For a safe, scenic, and immersive jungle adventure, plan your visit during the cooler, drier months when Meghalaya’s beauty is at its most inviting.
